Toronto: A shocking shooting incident near the University of Toronto has led to the death of a young Indian-origin doctoral student, raising fresh concerns about the safety of international students in Canada.

The victim, Shivank Avasthi, aged 20, was pursuing his doctoral studies when he was fatally shot near the Highland Creek Trail close to Old Kingston Road on Tuesday afternoon.

What Happened?

According to Toronto Police, officers responded to an emergency call reporting an “unknown trouble” at around 3:34 pm. Upon reaching the location, police found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate response efforts, the student was declared dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect or suspects fled the area before police arrived. As of now, no arrests have been made, and investigators are urging the public to share any information that could assist in identifying those responsible.

Reacting to the tragic incident, the Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep anguish over the loss of the young student.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Consulate said it is in close coordination with Canadian authorities and is extending all necessary assistance to the bereaved family.

“We express deep anguish over the tragic death of a young Indian doctoral student in a fatal shooting incident near the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus,” the statement said.

The incident has once again sparked debate over student safety in Canada, especially for international students living off-campus. Community members and student groups have called for enhanced security and faster action to prevent such incidents in the future.
